Specialized Investment Funds (SIF)
SIFs are SEBI's newest investment category — launched in 2025 to bridge the gap between traditional mutual funds and higher-ticket products like PMS and AIFs. They give experienced investors access to advanced, long-short strategies at a fraction of the entry cost of a PMS, while still operating under mutual-fund-grade regulatory oversight.
What Is a Specialized Investment Fund?
A Specialized Investment Fund is a SEBI-regulated pooled investment vehicle that allows fund managers considerably more flexibility than a traditional mutual fund — including the ability to take short positions and use derivatives — while still being run within the mutual fund regulatory framework (NAV-based, professionally managed, subject to disclosure norms). SEBI introduced the SIF framework via a circular dated February 27, 2025, effective April 1, 2025, specifically to give AMCs a regulated middle ground between plain-vanilla mutual funds and the far less restricted world of PMS and AIFs.
Minimum Investment & Who Can Invest
Unlike PMS (₹50 lakh minimum) or AIFs (₹1 crore minimum), SIFs are open to any investor — retail, HNI, NRI, or institutional — subject to a minimum aggregate investment of ₹10 lakh across all SIF strategies with a given AMC, tracked at the PAN level. This threshold applies collectively across strategies, not per scheme. If withdrawals bring an investor's holding below ₹10 lakh, units are frozen for 30 days; if the threshold isn't restored, the remaining units are redeemed automatically. SEBI-accredited investors are exempt from this minimum.
Investment Strategy Categories
SEBI has defined seven permitted SIF strategy categories across three broad groups:
| Group | Strategy | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Equity-Oriented | Equity Long-Short Fund | Minimum 80% in equities, can take short positions |
| Equity Ex-Top 100 Long-Short Fund | Minimum 65% outside the top 100 listed companies | |
| Sector Rotation Long-Short Fund | Actively rotates exposure across sectors | |
| Debt-Oriented | Debt Long-Short Fund | Duration and credit calls with long-short flexibility |
| Sectoral Debt Long-Short Fund | Concentrated exposure to specific debt sectors | |
| Hybrid | Active Asset Allocator Long-Short Fund | Dynamic allocation across equity, debt & other assets |
| Hybrid Long-Short Fund | Combines equity and debt long-short positions |
SIF vs Mutual Funds vs PMS vs AIF

Growth of the SIF Industry in India
Even in its first year, the category has scaled quickly as AMCs roll out new strategies and HNIs look for options beyond plain mutual funds:
Who Should Invest in SIF?
SIFs suit investors who already have a mature mutual fund portfolio and are looking to add tactically managed, higher-conviction strategies — typically HNIs or experienced investors comfortable with the extra complexity of long-short and derivative-based approaches. They are not a replacement for a core mutual fund portfolio, but a satellite allocation for those who understand the added risk and can meet the ₹10 lakh threshold. Investors uncomfortable with derivative exposure, or who are still building their core equity/debt allocation through SIP, are better served staying with traditional mutual funds for now.
Taxation of SIF Investments (FY 2026-27)
| SIF Type | Holding Period | Tax Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Equity-Oriented (65%+ in equities) | Up to 12 months | STCG @ 20% |
| Equity-Oriented (65%+ in equities) | Above 12 months | LTCG @ 12.5% (above ₹1.25 lakh exemption) |
| Debt-Oriented (65%+ in debt) | Any period | Taxed at investor's slab rate |
| Hybrid | Depends on allocation | Follows equity or debt rule based on which crosses the 65% threshold |
Tax rates are illustrative for FY 2026-27 and may change with future Finance Acts. Please consult your tax advisor before making investment decisions based on tax treatment.
